Vardzia

Vardzia is a spectacular cave monastery near Aspindza in southern Georgia. Excavated from the slopes of the Erusheti Mountain, it is one of the main attractions of the country. Vardzia was the place where Queen Tamar was crowned in 1186. The complex is composed of countless rooms and passages, which include churches, royal areas, administrative and wealth storage rooms, wine cellars, bakeries, prison cells and rooms for monks.
